Senior Postdoc Emily Klein Co-Chairs ICES Meeting on Long-Term Change in Fisheries Science & Policy
Emily Klein, a senior post-doctoral associate at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, recently co-chaired the annual meeting for the International Council for Exploration of the Seas Working Group on the History of Fish and Fisheries (ICES WGHIST). Klein has co-chaired the WGHIST for the past six years with Ruth Thurstan, a Lecturer at the University of Exeter (UK).
ICES is an international marine science organization of nearly 6,000 scientists from more than 20 countries, with an overarching goal of “meeting societal needs for impartial evidence on the state and sustainable use of our seas and oceans.” Much of this work is achieved via working groups, such as WGHIST, which undertakes interdisciplinary research to bring long-term perspectives to contemporary fisheries science and policy.
The 2020 meeting—the last for which Klein and Thurstan could serve as co-chairs—advanced work on the use of historical data, as well as on collaborative manuscripts and policy recommendations. Under the leadership of Klein and Thurstan, the WGHIST has grown in membership, advanced ICES goals, added to ICES online data resources, and published in high-impact journals.
More information about WGHIST can be found on the ICES website.
