Marta Marello, a Research Associate at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, recently attended Climate-KIC’s Champions reception in Paris in conjunction with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) talks. Held at the Grand Palais on December 4, the Climate-KIC program featured an expert roundtable made up of representatives from academia, the private sector, and intergovernmental organizations, followed by a keynote address by Mary Robinson, the UN Special Envoy for Climate Change. The discussion centered on scalable innovation aimed at decarbonization by 2050, specifically focusing on the need for a stronger role of the market, more collaborative innovation between sectors, and more integrative messaging strategies that highlight the societal benefits of sustainability.

The program honored the winners of the Climathon competition, a global 24-hour hackathon-style climate change event organized by Climate-KIC. All 12 winning teams of the Climathon program were invited to participate in the program at the Grand Palais, where they learned about successful climate innovations and heard from experts and leaders about the opportunity to scale up impact globally. The solution proposed by Marello’s team — which they had two minutes to pitch to the audience — aims to facilitate evacuation in case of weather-related emergencies.
