Selin and Sippl Attend UN Mercury Meeting in Uruguay

t-henrik-selin11-thumbPardee Faculty Fellow Henrik Selin and 2011 Pardee Summer Fellow Kristin Sippl attended the fourth session of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC4) to prepare a global legally binding instrument on mercury. The meeting was held June 27-July 2 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The Pardee Center’s official observer status for the negotiations enabled the pair to pursue research related to their recent publication Global Policy for Local Livelihoods: Phasing Out Mercury in kristin sippl-editArtisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining in Environment, Science and Policy for Sustainable Development Magazine. Selin studied the negotiations as a whole in connection with his broader research on the global management of hazardous chemicals, while Sippl focused on artisanal and small-scale gold mining as part of her dissertation research on sustainable livelihoods. They will report further on their findings through a Pardee Center event and/or publication in the Fall.
