Selin and Sippl Attend UN Mercury Meeting in Uruguay
Pardee Faculty Fellow Henrik Selin and 2011 Pardee Summer Fellow Kristin Sippl attended the fourth session of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC4) to prepare a global legally binding instrument on mercury. The meeting was held June 27-July 2 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The Pardee Center’s official observer status for the negotiations enabled the pair to pursue research related to their recent publication “Global Policy for Local Livelihoods: Phasing Out Mercury in
Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining“ in Environment, Science and Policy for Sustainable Development Magazine. Selin studied the negotiations as a whole in connection with his broader research on the global management of hazardous chemicals, while Sippl focused on artisanal and small-scale gold mining as part of her dissertation research on sustainable livelihoods. They will report further on their findings through a Pardee Center event and/or publication in the Fall.
