Pardee Fellow Speaks in Mexico and Michigan

t-pablo-suarezPardee Fellow Pablo Suarez was invited to give the keynote speech in Guadalajara, Mexico during an award ceremony at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente. On November 5th Dr. Suarez addressed the role of university students in the future of humanitarian work, and then joined the provost and other university authorities in giving the “Pedro Arrupe 2010” award to students who excelled in linking their academic work with concrete solutions for society.

On a separate occasion, Suarez was the featured speaker at the University of Michigan’s Science, Technology and Public Policy Lecture Series. Held in Ann Arbor on November 8th, Pablo Suarez’ talk addressed the climate risk management issues discussed in his Pardee Paper Linking Climate Knowledge and Decisions: Humanitarian Challenges . In his presentation, Dr. Suarez also faciliatted a participatory game in which the audience confronted the challenges of making disaster preparedness decisions based on science-based forecasts about likely floods. Suarez concluded with an invitation to strengthen the relations between policy researchers and humanitarian practitioners. The event was co-convened by the Science, Technology and Public Policy Program, the Environmental Law and Policy Program at the Law School and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan.
