Dr. Miquel Munoz, Pardee Center Post-Doctoral Fellow, participated in the elaboration of the Renewables Global Status Report 2009, published by the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), and released in Paris on May 13. Dr. Munoz has participated in the elaboration of all four editions of the Global Status Report since its inception in 2005.

REN21 is a global policy network that provides a forum for international leadership on renewable energy. Its goal is to bolster policy development for the rapid expansion of renewable energies in developing and developed countries. Open to a wide variety of dedicated stakeholders, REN21 connects governments, international institutions, non-governmental organisations, academia, industry associations, and other partnerships and initiatives.

The report highlights continued growth for the renewables sector in 2009, despite the economic slowdown. Wind power capacity frew 29% in 2008 to 121GW, doubling the capacity installed in 2005. China doubled its wind power capacity for the fifth year in a row, ending 2008 at 12 GW, and breaching China’s 2010 development target of 10 GW two years early. Grid-connected solar PV continued to be the fastest growing power generation technology, with a 70% increase in existing capacity to reach 13 GW. India emerged in 2008 as a major producer of solar PV, with new policies leading to $18 billion in new manufacturing investment plans or proposals by a number of companies.

At least 64 countries now have some type of policy to promote renewable power generation, and several hundred cities and local governments around the world are actively planning or implementing renewable energy policies and planning frameworks linked to carbon dioxide emissions reduction
