Yusuf Presents Pardee Paper at Annual Pugwash Meeting
Moeed Yusuf, Research Fellow at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, presented his Pardee Center publication Does Nuclear Energy Have a Future? (Pardee Paper No. 3) at the 58th Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs in The Hauge, Netherlands on April 18. The annual conference, this year titled “Justice, Peace, and Nuclear Disarmament,” is one of the most noted in the field of international relations and was attended by nearly 200 participants including top scientists, diplomats, and academics from around the world.
Yusuf presented his paper in the conference’s working group on “Climate Change, Energy Resources, and Technology Sharing and Nuclear Energy,” which comprised a number of well-known experts in the field.
The paper argues that the potential of a nuclear renaissance is exaggerated and while nuclear energy is likely to continue playing a modest role in global electricity generation, it has little potential to challenge the fossil-fuel driven energy market in a consequential manner. The presentation generated a lively debate.
Yusuf is a Teaching Fellow and doctoral candidate in the Political Science Department at Boston University.
