Applications Invited for 2009 Pardee Summer Fellowships

Application deadline: Friday, March 20, 2009.
The Pardee Graduate Summer Fellowship Program offers graduate students from across Boston University an opportunity for intensive interdisciplinary research and writing on topics that are aligned with the broad research interests of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University.
The Pardee Center conducts interdisciplinary, policy-relevant and future-orientated research that can contribute to long-term improvements in the human condition. The Center facilitates interdisciplinary research and is especially interested in rigorous analysis relating to longer-range human development, using global and regional (multi-national) analysis.
The 10-week fellowship (June 1 – August 7, 2009) will include a financial stipend of $5000, structured interaction with Pardee Center faculty and research fellows, and a collegial atmosphere that fosters peer support and intellectual growth. Summer Fellows will occupy workspace provided at the Pardee House for the duration of the fellowship while they conduct independent research, and produce (by July 31) a substantive research paper that may be considered for publication by the Pardee Center. Fellows are expected to participate in Pardee Center activities and all Summer Fellows’ events.
The Summer Fellowships are open to all Boston University graduate students. Doctoral students, including ABDs, are especially encouraged to apply.
Although proposals for any research topic related to the Pardee Center’s global human development mandate will be considered, proposals relating to longer-range trends in Africa are especially encouraged. Other issues of interest include: (a) the future of cities, (b) global health and development, (c) global governance, (d) the knowledge economy, and (e) anti-poverty strategies.
Applications should be submitted by email (as Word or PDF attachments) by close of business on Friday, March 20, 2009 to Cynthia Barakatt at barakatt@bu.edu and should include:
– copy of your recent CV;
– 1000-word (maximum) statement of the proposed research topic, including how it relates to the Pardee Center’s research agenda and your own research interests;
– recent writing sample (preferably short);
– copy of unofficial transcript;
– one letter of support from a Boston Univeristy faculty member.
Research proposals that link positively to the student’s own and/or BU faculty’s ongoing research are especially desirable.
Questions regarding the Summer Fellowship Program may be directed to Cynthia Barakatt at barakatt@bu.edu. Successful candidates will be notified by mid-April 2009.
