Pardee Center Director speaks in France on Global Governance

Prof. Adil Najam, the director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future was invited to present at a conference on “Impacting health, the environment and global governance. The challenges of taking a security approach” organized by Institut Francais des Relations Internationales (IFRI) in paris France.
The conference brought together leading experts from the health and the environment fields for an interdisciplinary debate on the potential impacts of thinking of health and environmental issues as security issues.
The ‘securitization’ process, by which an issue comes to be perceived as a security issue, of health and environmental issues was put into perspective, and the potential impacts of this process on global governance structures and on the issues themselves was debated, drawing on historical and practical case studies.
Apart from the Pardee Center’s Prof. Adil Najam, other speakers at the conference included: Dr. Lincoln Chen of the China Medical Board of New York, Dr. Gwyn Prins of the Mackinder Programme at the London School of Economics, Colin McInnes of the Center for Health and International Relations at the University of Aberystwyth, Stefan Elbe of the University of Susses, Hans Gunter Brauch of the Free University of Berlin, Prof. Barry Buzan of the London School of Economics, and Sylview Lemmet of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
