Pardee Center Director, Prof. Adil Najam, spoke on “Global Forests Governance” on the opening day of the “Paramaribo Dialogue” in Suriname.

The “Paramaribo Dialogue” is the name given to the Country-Led Initiative on Financing for Sustainable Forest Management in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF). The intergovernmental meeting was attended by nearly 200 participants representing governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations.

During his presentation, Prof. Najam discussed why forests governance has been so difficult in the past and laid out the proposals made in a new publications, Designing a Forest Financing Mechanism (FFM): A Call for Bold, Collaborative and Innovative Thinking which calls for the adoption of a “portfolio approach” to the financing forests question. The publication, co-authored by Hans Hoogeveen, Jagmohan S. Maini, William Moomaw, Adil Najam and Patrick Verkooijen has been published jointly by The Fletcher School (Tufts University), The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future (Boston University), and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (Government of the Netherlands).
