Pardee Center is Co-Sponsor of New Report on Foreign Investment in Latin America

Pardee Center Research Fellow Kevin P. Gallagher co-chaired an effort with numerous economists and political scientists from Latin America that produced a report examining the economic and environmental impacts of foreign investment in the region.  The report finds that Latin America has been successful in attracting unprecedented amounts of foreign investment and that such investment generally has been associated with higher wages and productivity.  However, the report also highlights that foreign firms often displaced domestic companies and had questionable environmental records.  The report concludes with recommendations regarding how the region can continue to attract foreign investment in ways that make it more conducive for sustainable development.

Gallagher will participate in a panel discussion to mark the release of the report on June 19 at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C.  The report was co-sponsored by the Frederick S. Pardee Center  for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and the Heinrich Böll Foundation with additional support provided by the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the General Service Foundation.
