Scholarly, Research, and/or Practice Interests
Dr. Fulford’s research centers on the identification and treatment of severe mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), with additional interest in the use of evidence-based behavioral interventions to increase motivation for self-management across a variety of health problems. He uses a biopsychosocial framework to uncover mechanisms involved in human motivation: the drive to set, strive for, and accomplish goals.
In addition to his research pursuits, Dr. Fulford is a licensed clinical psychologist and has contributed to the development and implementation of community-based psychosocial intervention programs for various non-profit agencies. He brings expertise in clinical research of mental illness to help form an invaluable bridge between the BU Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation and the Occupational Therapy Department at Boston University.
