BU Research Magazine Highlights a Hariri Institute Research Team’s Work in Machine Learning.

This past September 2018 a Data Science Faculty Fellow, Hariri Junior Faculty Fellow, and a past Hariri Fellow were highlighted in an article in BU Research magazine for their work developing a machine that can measure public sentiment about a given topic or event online. Where did this all start? It began with a talk given by Lei Guo (College of Communication assistant professor of emerging studies) at the BU Hariri Institute for Computing. Her talk would inspire Margrit Betke (College of Arts & Sciences professor for computer science), Prakash Ishwar (College of Engineering professor of electrical and computer engineering) and Derry Wijaya (College of Arts & Sciences assistant professor of computer science) to join in her research. Lei Guo stated, “Other big-data studies have used artificial intelligence to pick out the who-what-where from news stories. What makes this one unique is it will be the first to try to determine something subtler: the story’s particular point of view, or frame.” This is a quintessential example of the Institute’s mission of catalyzing research by making connections at its crossroads.
