Counseling and Referrals

The FSAO offers employees and their household family members up to 6 sessions of short-term counseling per issue, per year.  Our staff of licensed professionals have experience helping people with a range of personal and work-related issues such as:

  • Stress
  • Mental Health
  • Family and Relationships
  • Loss/Grief
  • Adjusting to Life Transitions
  • Substance Use and Addiction
  • Harassment and Misconduct
  • Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Assault
  • Burnout and Balancing Conflicting Demands
  • Concern about a Distressed Colleague
  • Workplace Issues
  • Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
  • Community Resources Support
  • Self-care and Well-being

In an initial meeting, your FSAO counselor will meet with you to listen to your concerns and help you develop a plan for resolving them.  This may include short-term, solution-focused counseling at the FSAO or a referral to resources at BU or in the community.  If you are referred for behavioral health treatment, your counselor will work with you to access high-quality services with attention to your preferences for therapist identity and therapeutic approach.

Counseling sessions are confidential, free of charge, and available in person in our Charles River and Medical campus offices, virtually via our HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform, or by telephone.  FSAO counselors offer services in English and Mandarin (普通).   Interpreter services are available for all other languages.
