Risk Factors
  • Gender: female 2x as likely
  • Age: peak ages of onset 20 – 40 years old
  • Family history of depression: 1.5 to 3x as likely
  • Postpartum: up to 10% suffer depression
  • Marital status: higher risk for women if married; lower risk for men if married
  • History of Previous Depressions: if 1 previous episode, 50% probability of relapse; if 2 previous episodes, 75% probability of relapse
  • Chronic medical illness
