Differential Diagnoses

Several other conditions may resemble depression. The chief differential diagnoses to consider are:

  • grief and bereavement
  • substance abuse
  • adjustment disorders with depressed mood (less severe, more situationally determined than Major Depression)
  • dementia
  • mood or energy alterations due to other medical conditions or post-surgery
  • side effects of prescribed medications
