  • the diagnosis of depression is most commonly missed when the patient reports physical complaints
  • in one study, 69% of depressed patients presented to their PCPs exclusively with somatic symptoms
  • many patients are unaware that their somatic symptoms are associated with depression
  • pain (nonspecific musculoskeletal pain, back pain and headaches especially) is the most frequent complaint, and often the only one
