World in Danger: Germany and Europe in an Uncertain Time (11/16/20)
On Monday, November 16, the Center for the Study of Europe hosted Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger for a virtual lecture on his newly published book: World in Danger: Germany and Europe in an Uncertain Time. The book describes a world in turmoil as tensions mount between the US and China, global institutions are under strain, and populist movements grow in size and strength. Despite the present gloom, Ischinger envisions a European future of peace and stability and a more powerful role for Europe in shaping global politics. Following his presentation, Ischinger fielded questions pertaining to the transatlantic relationship, European defense and security, and the pandemic, among others.
The event was moderated by Ambassador Vesko Garčević, Professor of the Practice of International Relations at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies. Prof. Kaija Schilde, Associate Professor of International Relations, participated as discussant.
Ambassador Ischinger has been Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) since 2008. A German career diplomat, he was State Secretary (Deputy Foreign Minister) from 1998 to 2001. From 2001 to 2006, he was the Federal Republic of Germany’s Ambassador to the U.S., and from 2006 to 2008, to the Court of St James’s. He is a Senior Professor at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, and serves on the boards of companies as well as non-profit-institutions, including Atlantik-Brücke/Berlin, the American Academy/Berlin, and the Atlantic Council of the United States/Washington D.C.
