European Democracy Forum with Dalibor Rohac and Vivien Schmidt (03/31/22)
In collaboration with the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)’s Executive Council undergraduate program, the Center for the Study of Europe will host a “European Democracy Forum” with Dalibor Rohac and Vivien Schmidt. The event will be moderated by Zak Schneider, Chairman and Founder of BU’s AEI Executive Council chapter. Schneider is a 4th-year student at Boston University studying Political Science and International Relations. The aim of this talk is present a robust defense of liberal democracy (and international institutions) from multiple perspectives. The conversation will include an analysis of the war in Ukraine and how it will affect the global liberal democratic order going forward.
Dalibor Rohac is a senior fellow at the AEI, where he studies European political and economic trends, specifically Central and Eastern Europe, the European Union (EU) and the eurozone, US-EU relations, and the post-Communist transitions and backsliding of countries in the former Soviet bloc. He is also the author of “In Defense of Globalism” (Rowman and Littlefield, 2019). His previous book, “Towards an Imperfect Union: A Conservative Case for the EU” (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016), was included on Foreign Affairs magazine’s list of best books of 2016.
Vivien Schmidt is Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Professor of Political Science at Boston University, as well as Founding Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe. Her most recent book is er latest books include Europe’s Crisis of Legitimacy: Governing by Rules and Ruling by Numbers in the Eurozone (2020).
