Event Highlights: Chinese and French Social Capital Networks in North Africa
On Friday, October 29, the Center for the Study of Europe hosted a seminar on “Chinese and French Social Capital Networks in North Africa” with Lina Benabdallah, Assistant Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University. The virtual event, organized in cooperation with the African Studies Center and CURA, took place as part of an ongoing series of events—Assessing China’s Belt and Road Initiative—moderated by Grant Rhode, an affiliate of the Center for the Study of Asia. Michael Woldemariam, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Pardee School, served as respondent.
Prof. Benabdallah focussed her remarks on people to people cooperation, an aspect of the belt and road initiative that has received less attention than others. Following an overview of China’s human capital investments in Africa, she offered a comparison of current versus historical arrangements and talked about some of the factors driving human capital investments as well as future trends.
