Event Highlights: The Brussels Effect with Anu Bradford
This virtual book talk with Anu Bradford, Henry L. Moses Professor of Law and International Organization at Columbia University, was hosted by BU’s Center for the Study of Europe and took place on Thursday, January 28, 2021. The subject of discussion was Bradford’s 2020 book, The Brussels Effect: How the European Union Rules the World. Kevin Gallagher, Professor of Global Development Policy, and Tarek Hassan, Associate Professor of Economics, both at Boston University, provided comments.
In The Brussels Effect, Bradford argues that contrary to popular narratives that the EU is a declining power on the world stage, the EU is in fact exerts enormous influence over global commerce, shaping corporate policy in areas such as data privacy, consumer health and safety, environmental protection, antitrust, and online hate speech. Bradfords shows how the EU has acquired such power, why multinational companies use EU standards as global standards, and why the EU’s role as the world’s regulator is likely to continue.
