EU Inside Out with the Czech and Slovak Ambassadors to the US (10/23/13)

2013 marks 24 years since the “Velvet Revolution” that put an end communist rule in Czechoslovakia and 20 years since the “Velvet Divorce,” or the break up of Czechoslovakia into two independent states. Join us on Wednesday, October 23, for a conversation with the Czech and Slovak Ambassadors who will discuss subsequent developments in their countries, in particular, since joining the EU. Questions to be pursued include what the EU is becoming, how its policies and institutions are evolving, how its role as international actor is enhanced (or not) in response to new global challenges, and why, under conditions of globalization, its relationship with the United States remains more important than ever. Moderated by Alan Berger, Retired editorial writer for international affairs, Boston Globe.

The “EU Inside Out: Conversations with European Ambassadors” series is funded in part by a grant from the European Commission Delegation in Washington DC. The series addresses, broadly, the theme of democratic politics under conditions of globalization from an “inside” point of view. Centering the conversations around global challenges, which by their nature do not yield to nation state solutions (whether economic crisis, transnational terrorism, or global warming), highlights the value of the European Union as a model for transnational cooperation, regional integration, and cultural coexistence.

This event is accompanied by an exhibit of Slovak posters showcasing 20 years of Slovak independence. It is co-sponsored by the Center for Finance, Law & Policy at Boston University and the Czech and Slovak Association of Boston.
