Poetics Between Languages – The Turkish-German Experience
Boston University welcomed Zafer Senocak, Elizabeth Oehlkers Wright, and Askold Melnyczuk for a discussion entitled Poetics Between Languages: The Turkish-German Experience, which took place on March 19th, 2009.
Zafer Senocak was born in 1961 in Ankara but moved to Germany and has lived there since 1970. Senocak’s works have been highly praised and translated into more than four different languages, including: Turkish, English, Dutch, French, and Hebrew. He’s been awarded with several important literary prizes in Germany and was the Max Kade Distinguished Visitor at MIT in 2009.
Official translator of Ernst Peter Fischer’s Beauty and the Beast: The Aesthetic Moment in Science, written originally in German, Elizabeth Oehlkers Wright has been translating Zafer Senocak among other German poets for many years. She’s been awarded the Gary Wilson Award from the University of Arkansas Press, the Agni’s William J. Arrowsmith Translation Award, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Literary Translators Association, and the University of Arkansas Fulbright College.
The moderator, Askold Melnyczuk, is the founding editor of AGNI where he writes an essay series entitled “Shadowboxing”. He received a Lila Wallace-Readers’ Digest Award in Fiction in 1997.
