Running the Gauntlet
Boston University had the distinct pleasure of hosting author Barbara Masin on September 27th, 2007. Coincidentally, BU was one of the very first stops on her book tour – Masin was taking the time to promote her groundbreaking historical thriller.
Published only a year before, Gauntlet tells the epic story of Barbara Masin’s father, his brother, and their three friends. Together, these brave men fled Czechoslovakia and communism in 1953, crossed East Germany, and somehow made it to freedom—West Berlin. A tale that Masin had eagerly listened to countless times throughout her childhood, and yet it never seemed like she truly knew the whole story. As she grew older, she realized how there seemed to be many unanswered questions. Eventually, Masin taught herself very basic Czech and then decided to dedicate the next four years to researching what really happened in 1953. Thus, the origin of the greatest story of the cold war.
Moderating the event was Professor Igor Lukes.
