The European Union: Unity in Diversity
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, Boston University hosted a panel discussion on March 28th, 2007 entitled The European Union: Unity in Diversity. It was an honor to be joined by the following eight distinguished individuals:
– Manuela Bairos, Consul General of Portugal in Boston
– David Barry, Consul General of Ireland in Boston
– François Gauthier, Consul General of France in Boston
– Constantinos Orphanides, Consul General of Greece in Boston
– John Rankin, Consul General of the United Kingdom in Boston
– Carlos Robles, Consul General of Spain in Boston
– Liborio Stellino, Consul General of Italy in Boston
– Wolfgang Vorwerk, Consul General of Germany in Boston
One of the topics of discussion concerned Turkey and how it still lacked the qualifications to enter the European Union, particularly due to social and political affairs. In addition, the Consuls General explored the open-door immigration policy in Europe, as well as the economic shifts that had been taking place. Even the subject of drafting an EU constitution was examined by the group.
With Alan Berger, former Senior Editorial writer for the Boston Globe, taking the role of moderator, the audience grew to approximately 150 students.
