The Challenges of European Integration
We’re continuing to podcast events from our archive. Episode 13 is a March 2004 panel discussion entitled “Challenges of European Integration: Views from Old and New Europe” featuring Gesine Schwan and Michal Buchowski. Gesine Schwann is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which has nominated her twice as candidate in the German presidential elections, and President of the European University Viadrina, a small, privately endowed university in eastern Germany, where one third of the students are Polish. Michal Buchowski is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Poznan in Poland and of Comparative Central European Studies at European University Viadrina. At the time of this discussion, he was Distinguished Visiting Professor for International Affairs at Columbia University.
This discussion was organized in cooperation with the American Council on Germany and was introduced by Council Director Marie Warburg. It took place just prior to Poland’s accession to the European Union on May 1, 2004. Both speakers shared glimpses of the possibilities that the expanded institutional framework of the European Union offers to both old and new members to build broader and deeper relations across centuries old divisions.
