Important Safety Message Regarding Hand Sanitizer

Boston University has become aware through recent press coverage that benzene, a contaminant, had been found in specific lots of certain brands of hand sanitizer. Benzene is linked to an increased risk for certain types of cancer.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) reviewed the types of hand sanitizers purchased and none of the identified brands have been procured for general distribution on campus. You should review the complete list of products (found on page 14 of the linked document) in which benzene was detected and discard any products you feel uncomfortable using, whether or not they fall within the FDA-established limits.

EHS recommends the use of other brands of sanitizer or wash with soap and water to sanitize your hands.
