Professional Development

Professional development is an integral part of graduate education. In coordination with offices and centers across campus, the Department and the Graduate School help graduate students develop the skills they need to succeed in both the academic and non-academic worlds. Skills learned throughout matriculation are transferable to post-graduate professional careers. The University provides abundant opportunities for students to develop as teachers, scholars, speakers, and researchers.  The MA in Earth & Environment requires that all student engage in professional development activities. This requirement may be satisfied in a variety of ways such as presenting research at conferences, engaging with professional or community organizations, or other activities approved by the student’s adviser. It is the student’s responsibility to identify and explore opportunities in professional development.

Graduate students have engaged recently in professional development by:

  • Presenting a poster at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union
  • Presenting a paper at the annual meeting of the American Association of Geographers
  • Conducting interviews in south Florida for thesis research
  • Organizing the BU Veterans Association
  • Presenting research in the E&E Grad Talks symposium
  • Revamping the lab components for EE 505 Geographic Information Systems
