Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the difference between convocation and commencement?
Convocation is a department or school specific ceremony in which graduate names are read and students walk across the stage. Commencement is for the entire university and is held on Nickerson Field. Students will be acknowledged at commencement by school (ie. CAS).
All University Commencement
Sunday, May 18th at 1pm
Nickerson Field
Who participates in E&E Convocation?
All of our degree recipients! This includes
- PhD Recipients (graduating August 2024, January 2025, and May 2025)
- Master’s Degree Recipients (graduating January 2025, May 2025, and August 2025)
- BA/MS Recipients (graduating January 2025, May 2025, and August 2025)
- Bachelor’s Degree Recipients (graduating January 2025, May 2025, and August 2025)
Students with minors in our department will have the opportunity to participate in the ceremonies for their degree granting department.
Wait… So I can attend even if I’m not officially graduating until August?
Yes! Technically speaking, only the January 2025 graduates will be official degree recipients when they walk across the stage. It takes a few weeks to approve the completion of degrees, so May 2025 graduates are still tentative at the ceremony.
Also, if you are a January 2026 graduate, you are eligible to attend the May 2026 ceremony— however, you can request to participate this year if you want!
Do I need tickets to attend convocation?
No! Earth & Environment Convocation is not a ticketed event. All are welcome!
How do I get my diploma?
Your diploma will be mailed to you, and you will be handed a placebo envelope at convocation.
Please complete these steps to ensure you receive your diploma.
Is the ceremony live-streamed?
Unfortunately, the ceremony will not be live-streamed this year. Apologies for any inconvenience!
How do I know if I’m allowed to participate?
You should be receiving emails regularly from ailayne@bu.edu. If you are not sure, please email me ASAP! ailayne@bu.edu
How long is the ceremony?
A bit over an hour long is the anticipated length. The ceremony will be followed by an open reception in the Ziskind Lounge
What are the latin honor cutoffs?
I’m not allowed to say :) Honors are based off all 8 semesters at BU, so they will not be official at graduation. You will receive an email to pick up your honors cords if you are on the tentative honors list!
What if I don’t have regalia?
You will not be permitted to walk. Please visit Barnes and Noble to see if there is any spare regalia
I need accommodations for a disability for either myself or a guest. How can I request them?
Please complete this form by May 9th
If it is after May 9th, please email ailayne@bu.edu and I will do my best to accommodate you!
When should I show up?
Graduates — show up by 3:00pm in the Ziskind Lounge
