Dr. Farouk El-Baz Environmental Science Prize Awarded to Alanna Martins!

The Dr. Farouk El-Baz Environmental Science Prize is named after the Founding Director of BU’s Center for Remote Sensing. Dr. El-Baz has conducted field investigations in every major desert in the world and is known for his pioneering work in using space images to explore for groundwater in arid lands; he is credited with the discovery of groundwater resources in Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The prize is awarded to Earth & Environmental Sciences students who have excelled in their major and embody Dr. El-Baz’s investigative spirit.

Congratulations to this year’s El-Baz Environmental Prize winner, Alanna Martins!

Alanna has been praised for her active and valued contributions in the classroom and departmental community. She is graduating with a BA in Earth and Environmental Science and an MS in Remote Sensing and Geospatial Sciences.

Department faculty describe her as ” a strong and serious student” who is consistently engaged in the classroom and has undertaken research investigating wildfire hazards in the Northeast. Alanna also served as an independent consultant for a nonprofit called HEET, where she completed pre-environmental impact assessments to aid in the transition from gas to geothermal heating. In addition to her stellar academic performance and her dedication to learning and scholarship, our faculty have noted that she is a kind, and friendly presence in the department.
