SMSC concluded its Spring Lecture Series with Emile Nakhleh, a retired CIA analyst and author of A Necessary Engagement: Reinventing America’s Relations with the Muslim World. During the lecture, he outlined several policies that if enacted could greatly improve relations.

Due Process in Islamic Criminal Law

SMSC invited New York School of Law scholar and former BU Law School visiting professor Sadiq Reza to host a talk about “Due Process in Islamic Criminal Law.”  In the lecture, Dr. Reza highlighted examples of due process within Shari’a.  He also took questions on the similarities and differences between Shari’a and the western practice of common law.

SMSC inaugurated the Spring 2009 events with his talk “Is Afghanistan a Failed State: The answer from one bazaar town.” Mr. Coburn highlighted his experiences of living in the city of Istalif, Afghanistan between 2006 and 2008 and outlined the political structures and power players involved in the town’s pottery industry.
