Kingmakers: The Invention of the Modern Middle East

SMSC welcomed journalists and authors Karl E. Meyer and Shareen Brysac to Boston University to discuss their new book Kingmakers: The Invention of the Modern Middle East. During the talk, they traced the history of British and American political involvement in the Middle East (specifically Iraq) and how decisions made in the early 20th century are affecting the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. In addition to the historical analysis, Meyer and Brysac added some personal stories of their experiences covering news in the Middle East. A book signing followed the talk.

Her talk, titled “Mecca and Main Street: Muslim Life in America after 9/11,” highlighted some of the findings of her study of Islam in America published in her new book of the same name.

SMSC co-hosted a lecture with the South Asian Consortium by BU Professor Frank Korom. His talk, titled “Bawa Muhaiyaddeen and the Making of a Transnational Sufi Family” highlighted the history of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen in both Sri Lanka and Philadelphia.

SMSC welcomed Dr. Enes Karic, member of the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo and former Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports for Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dr. Karic’s lecture, titled “Islamic Bosnia,” highlighted the spread of Islam into Bosnia, the spiritual institutions of Bosnian Muslims, folk religion, and Ilahiyas and Qasidas in contemporary Bosnia.

SMSC resumed its lecture series with a talk hosted by Dr. Adnan Onart titled “Four Gates & a Gate Keeper: Reflections on Anatolian Sufism Through the Poetry of Yunus Emre.” It reviewed those poems and sought to establish whether his pervasive poetic rhetoric, its ethos, logos and pathos, can serve as a scaffold for access to the reconstruction of Islam in the 21st century America.
