Editorial Manager: Journal of Religion and Demography
The peer-reviewed Journal of Religion and Demography (JRD) presents information on the state of religious statistics around the world in sets of well-arranged tables and scholarly articles from various academic disciplines, including social science (anthropology and sociology), demography, history, and geography. Each issue provides summaries of findings, sources, methods, and implications surrounding international religious demography. The target audience for the JRD is general institutions interested in demographic trends and developments with regard to religion. The JRD is published twice a year, in April and October.
The co-editors-in-chief of the JRD are Gina A. Zurlo, Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs, Boston University; and Vegard Skirbekk, Centre for Fertility and Health, Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Columbia Aging Center, Columbia University. We are seeking a student to serve as the Editorial Manager of the JRD, working three hours a week ($15/hr) for the entire academic year. The Editorial Manager overseas the process of putting together an issue of the JRD, from receiving papers for publication to releasing the volume to the publisher. The ideal candidate is able to work independently and effectively learn the ins-and-outs of the Editorial Management system (the online platform of our publisher, Brill).
Job responsibilities include:
- Working directly with Dr. Zurlo on training in the Editorial Manager system for the JRD;
- Running the Editorial Manager system to keep track of author submissions, reviewers, and releasing issues to the publisher (i.e., managing the journal’s overall production schedule);
- Sending stock email reminders to authors and reviewers about the status of their responsibilities;
- Maintaining a shared calendar to ensure each issue is on time;
- Weekly check-ins with Dr. Zurlo and Dr. Skirbekk on the status of the current issue (authors, reviewers, etc.);
- Monthly Zoom calls with editors-in-chief to ensure issues are on time;
- Help the editors with promotion of the journal.
Required skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Exceptional organization and management skills
- Ability to work remotely/off-site
- Proper time-management skills
- Experience in copy-editing
