Happy Birthday! MET’s Computer Science Department Celebrates 40 Years
One computer lab, one full-time faculty member, and one degree program—when MET’s Department of Computer Science was founded on September 1, 1979, there was no other computer science department at Boston University, and it would be two years before IBM introduced the personal computer. Forty years and countless tech innovations later, the department boasts nearly twenty core faculty, five master’s degree programs, and 12 graduate certificate programs—along with a bachelor’s degree and an undergraduate certificate—focused on critical areas such as data analytics, health informatics, cybersecurity, software development, information systems, and many others.
Today, the department is home to programs accredited by the Project Management Institute Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC) and the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). MET’s information security programs are certified by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) and were instrumental in the University’s designation by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense and Research. Among many innovations, in 2004 the online Master of Science in Computer Information Systems was one of Boston University’s earliest distance learning programs, ranked since 2015 among the top 8 Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology Programs (U.S. News & World Report).
MET’s Department of Computer Science continues to produce successful graduates who are highly qualified for leadership in the rapidly evolving IT environment, across all industries. The MET community commends the department for forty years of academic excellence and cutting-edge research.
