Jared Pincus
Jared Pincus grew up in Green Brook, New Jersey—just an hour west of New York City—and completed both his BS (2021) and MS (2022) in Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, along the way contributing to research and writing a master’s thesis. He began his PhD at Boston University in fall 2022, where he studies programming languages and formal logic, and explores their connections to linguistics and philosophy.
Jared was drawn to BU for its strong support in his niche research area and the active faculty-led programming languages research group. He appreciates the dense academic environment of Boston and the sense of community he found with his prospective advisors. On campus, he primarily works in his office—known humorously as the “Jenga” building—or from home, though he enjoys coffee breaks and fresh air at spots like Pavement Coffee and Marsh Plaza.
Jared’s research within BU’s POPV (Principles of Programming and Verification) group spans formal methods, mechanized proofs, security, and static analysis. Beyond academia, he develops video games, designs roller coasters, and creates mathematical art like 3D-printed models inspired by patterns such as the Trihelical Square Tiling.
Looking ahead, Jared plans to pursue a career as a research professor, combining teaching, scientific research, and outreach to further his passion for discovery and sharing ideas.
Shriram Raja
Shriram Raja is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at Boston University, originally from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at PSG College of Technology, followed by a Master’s in Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he worked on real-time system scheduling. His interest in real-time systems began during his undergraduate years under the guidance of an influential professor, and combined with his passion for teaching, this led him to pursue doctoral studies.
Shriram chose BU primarily because of the strong alignment with his advisor, whose guidance he sees as key to his academic and professional development. He has also found the graduate student community at BU to be a valuable source of collaboration and support. His favorite study and work spaces are in the Center for Computing & Data Sciences, though he enjoys spending time at BU Beach on sunny days.
At BU, Shriram values the opportunity to observe and learn from the diverse teaching approaches of his professors, which continues to shape his own perspective on research and education. After graduation, he hopes to join academia and pursue a career in teaching and research.
