Title: The Internet after 40 Years

Speaker: Prof. Craig Partridge, Colorado State University

When: Friday, January 26, 2024 @ 11am
Where: CDS 950

Abstract
The ARPANET was turned on in 1969 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. The Internet became operational in 1983 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023. The two anniversaries led to a number of retrospective interviews, a few papers, a workshop and lots of emails that sought to distill what we had learned about data networking protocols and architecture over those decades.

I participated in some of those retrospectives. Furthermore, I joined the Internet community in 1983, so I lived through some of the more painful experiences that shaped the retrospectives. In this talk, I will present what wisdom I extracted from the retrospectives. Among other points I will suggest that (1) while the Internet made some mistakes related to security, they are not the mistakes you might think; (2) Metcalfe’s law and its companion, Padlipsky’s MxN rule, cut two ways; and (3) one should generally assume the Devil picks your inputs.
