Classical Studies PhD Student
Philip Levine is in his sixth year in the doctoral program in Classics at Boston University. Prior to BU, he had the pleasure of teaching Latin to high school students in two Massachusetts public schools, meanwhile earning a Masters Degree in Teaching Latin and Classical Humanities from the University of Massachusetts Boston. He studies the intersections of religion, philosophy and poetry in the thought of the Pre-Socratics and of Plato. His dissertation in progress, entitled “I Speak a Twofold Tale: Empedokles and the Poetics of Technē” explores how the concept of technē or craft bridges the gap between the language of ritual and the language of physics in Empedokles’ poetry.
