Professor Stephen Scully Selected as a 2021 Recipient of the Susan K. Jackson Award

Chair and Professor Stephen Scully was selected as a 2021 faculty recipient of the Susan K. Jackson Award, which honors those who create and nurture community in the College of Arts & Sciences. He was one of two faculty awardees selected this year.

Susan K. Jackson was a longtime faculty member and senior associate dean in the College of Arts & Sciences. She demonstrated her dedication to CAS in many ways, not least through her care for other people. She guided and mentored undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, and administrators, and in doing so strengthened the College. This award was established after her passing in June 2017 to celebrate her memory by recognizing students, faculty, and staff members who, through their actions and initiatives, help to foster the unique and vibrant intellectual community of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Professor Scully received numerous enthusiastic nominations praising his efforts to foster community in the Department of Classical Studies. Both before and throughout his tenure as department chair, he has worked tirelessly to support the BU Classics community by maintaining strong relationships with faculty and students, coordinating impactful programs and activities, and volunteering countless hours of his time to course development, student recruitment efforts, and consultations with his colleagues. He has also looked ahead to the future of Classics at BU through his work fostering interdisciplinary connections through the creation of new partnerships and developing inclusive pedagogy. His nominators extolled him as an exceptional faculty mentor and a unifying presence in the department, particularly through this last turbulent year: they wrote that he is the “heart and soul” of the Classics department and the “glue that holds us all together, through good times and bad.”

Congratulations Professor Scully!
