Classics Students Awarded Competitive Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The Department of Classical Studies recognizes the ongoing achievements of our undergraduates in Boston University’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Four Classics undergraduates partook in UROP in the 2016-2017 academic year, adding to the Department’s long tradition of advancing Classics scholarship.

Under the mentorship of Prof. Stephen Scully, Gideon Breslaw ’18, Elizabeth Higgins ’17, and Suzanna Levey ’17 participated in the textual editing of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Hesiod in Spring 2017.

A student of both Classics & Philosophy, Gregory Kerr ’18 helmed an individual UROP in Spring 2017 under the mentorship of Prof. Loren Samons, entitled “Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?”: The History of Abrahamic Religions, Their Societies, Their Philosophies, and Their Conflicts. Gregory’s project explored the history of the Abrahamic religions and their interactions through warfare and philosophy in the Middle Ages and beyond. The UROP resulted in a series of innovative educational videos, already garnering tens of thousands of views on YouTube. Explore each at: Islam, Christianity, Judaism, The Muslim Conquests, The Crusades, and Abrahamic Religious Philosophy

Continuing the strength of his Spring ’17 UROP, Gregory went on to win a prestigious UROP Humanities Scholars Award, awarded to 10 rising sophomores and juniors.
