Elizabeth Foster ’19 Wins Lalaounis Museum Internship

GetFileAttachmentClassical Studies major Elizabeth Foster has become the first Boston University student to win a prestigious internship at the internationally-acclaimed Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum in Athens. A sophomore and a participant in the 2016 BU Philhellenes Summer Study, Ms. Foster says that she is “very excited to be returning to Athens for this incredible opportunity.” The Ilias Lalounis Jewelry Museum, located at the foot of the Acropolis and directed by Boston University alumna Ioanna Lalaounis (M.A. Art History/Museum Studies, 1990), houses an amazing collection of the creations of Ilias Lalaounis. Mr. Lalalounis’ world-renowned work was often inspired by jewelry from the ancient Mediterranean, including collections drawing on Minoan, Mycenaean, and later Greek models. In many cases, Lalalounis had to recreate or rediscover techniques used by ancient goldsmiths and artists in order to fashion works inspired by these craftsmen. The Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum therefore brings the worlds of ancient and modern Greece together in a very tangible (and exquisite) way, and the Boston University Philhellenes are very proud to have one of their own Summer Study veterans as a winner of this internship.
