Internationally acclaimed flutist and composer Valerie Coleman’s work wins Grammy
The New York Youth Symphony has won a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance, with their album featuring the work of CFA alum Valerie Coleman, Florence Price, and Jessie Montgomery.
BU College of Fine Arts is thrilled for acclaimed flutist, composer, entrepreneur, and CFA Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Valerie Coleman (CFA’95, BUTI’89), whose composition works were featured in the 2023 Grammy-award winning album “Works by Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, Valerie Coleman.”
The album, which won in the Best Orchestral Performance category and is performed by the New York Youth Symphony, is a significant win for women and BIPOC composers. According to Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy, this is the first time for a Youth group to win and the first for a Black woman composer to win.
Congratulations to Coleman, Montgomery, Price, and to the New York Youth Symphony!
