Meet the 2022 CFA Convocation Student Speaker: Grace Saathoff (CFA’22, COM’22)

May 17, 2022
Twitter Facebook

Every year, Boston University College of Fine Arts invites a graduating senior to apply to be the Student Speaker at CFA’s Convocation. We love a student who exhibits BU and CFA pride and who can deliver an inspiring message (making us both laugh and cry is a must!)

This year, we are honored to have Grace Saathoff (CFA’22, COM’22) as CFA’s 2022 Convocation Student Speaker! Grace, a double major graduating with a BFA in Theatre Arts: Design and Production from CFA School of Theatre and a B.S. in Film & Television from BU College of Communication, will be taking the stage on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at BU’s Track & Tennis Center.

Get to know a little bit more about Grace in this Q&A – apparently, she’s more famous thank you think!

CFA: What was your experience like at BU?

Grace: I came to BU thinking I wanted to be an aerospace engineer and ended up with two arts degrees if that tells you anything about how much I have changed over the course of these four years. My collegiate experience was heavily shaped by COVID-19, but I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything. I got to envision, pitch, and produce a version of Midsummer Night’s Dream in the spring of my junior year, freelance for award-winning cosplayers, make a whole collection of 1950s housewife dresses, and accidentally go viral on TikTok. (You can follow me @itsmytuberculosis)

I also received the following awards and accolades during my time at BU:

  • Virgil C. Johnson Award for Costuming
  • Fleder-Rosenberg Screenplay Award Winner
  • YoungArts Finalist in Writing
  • Recently Speenran Dishonored 2 and Did Pretty Well

How does it feel to know you’ll be speaking at CFA’s Convocation? How do you prepare for this?

I mainly hope I don’t bore people! I don’t pretend to think that I can speak on behalf of my peers, so rather I speak to them. This is me, your friendly neighborhood girl in converse, standing at a podium, wishing you a future filled with drinks with little umbrellas in it. You deserve to be praised. You deserve to be celebrated. You deserve for someone to remind you one last time that you are the coolest person you know.

What do you want people to remember about the Class of 2022?

I hope people remember us as we were – individuals who had individual fears and wants, hopes, and favorite snacks. I hope the classes behind us learn from our mistakes and continue to wear the well-worn path of good choices. I hope BU remembers us, but more realistically I hope we remember BU, so that when the time comes for us to help scared graduates diving off into the great unknown – we can tell them how to do a backflip on the way down.

Follow @BUArts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter throughout the week for more on the 2022 CFA Convocation!
