Spring Operas: Dolores Claiborne & The Cunning Little Vixen
Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Music: Opera Institute and School of Theatre announce the spring 2019 season of operas, beginning with Tobias Picker’s Dolores Claiborne, a re-telling of Stephen King’s thriller co-commissioned with New York City Opera, and Leoš Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, which will receive its premiere this summer at the esteemed Glimmerglass Festival.
The season’s repertoire is guided by two unique collaborations that have developed over the preceding year. Owing to BU Opera Institute’s relationship with composer Tobias Picker through previous productions of his operas Thérèse Raquin (2009) and Emmeline (2017), Mr. Picker and his publisher Schott Music Corp has invited the Opera Institute to be a co-commissioner with New York City Opera for a chamber version of his newest opera Dolores Claiborne, which premiered in its original version at San Francisco Opera in 2013, and in its chamber version by NYCO in 2017. The Opera Institute is thrilled to present an entirely original production of the new version of Dolores Claiborne in its New England Premiere in the new Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre.
The Boston University Opera Institute is also proud to be a co-producer of a new production of Janáček‘s The Cunning Little Vixen, which will receive its premiere this summer at the highly revered Glimmerglass Festival, and will be directed by CFA alum and frequent guest stage director for the Opera Institute E. Loren Meeker. Costume designer Erik Teague, who also designed costumes for Thérèse Raquin, is also a BU alum.
“Each of these high-profile collaborations serve to enrich the student experience and we are grateful to New York City Opera and Glimmerglass for recognizing the value of our program,” says Lumpkin.
