BU Tanglewood Institute Performs at the Esplanade in Summer 2018
Boston University Tanglewood Institute Musicians to Perform as Part of Landmarks Orchestra Summer Festival on the Esplanade. The musicians of BUTI will headline an evening of orchestral and wind music by Bernstein and Stravinsky.
Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI)—one of North America’s premiere summer training programs for young musicians—has announced that the musicians of the BUTI Young Artists Wind Ensemble and Young Artists Orchestra will headline an evening of music on July 25, 2018 as part of Boston Landmarks Orchestra’s concert series on the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade. BUTI’s 2018 Summer Concert Series, including the Esplanade concert, is generously sponsored by M&T Bank.
Following the success of the BUTI prelude concert with Landmarks Orchestra last summer, the two large ensembles will travel from the Berkshires to Boston to offer the free public concert. Inspired by the depth and breadth of Massachusetts-born composer, conductor, and pianist Leonard Bernstein, BUTI will bring his contributions to the forefront in this concert to celebrate the Bernstein Centennial.
The Young Artists Wind Ensemble will open the concert with Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Suite from MASS with Triton Brass (BUTI’s 2018 Brass Quintet-in-Residence), and Symphonic Dances from West Side Story conducted by H. Robert Reynolds. The Young Artists Orchestra will then perform Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) under the baton of Paul Haas (BUTI ’87, ’88).
BUTI Executive Director Hilary Field Respass says, “It is an exciting privilege to bring Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s Young Artists Orchestra and Wind Ensemble to perform at this historic Boston venue. We’re looking forward to sharing with Boston the extraordinary talent and passion of these 150 young artists from Massachusetts and across the country, and are honored that the Boston Landmarks Orchestra has chosen BUTI as a partner this season.”
Arthur Rishi, Artistic Administrator of Boston Landmarks Orchestra adds, “We are so happy to present the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra and Young Artists Wind Ensemble for a full program this year. We were so impressed by the professionalism and high quality of the BUTI small ensembles who opened one concert for us last season, and we know that our audiences will enjoy hearing a full program this year. We have so many strong connections with BU and BUTI—several Landmarks musicians are on the faculty, and of course our Maestro Christopher Wilkins is a proud alumnus of BUTI.”
“This concert gives some of our region’s top young musicians a chance to perform on a great stage—the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade—in a fitting tribute to Leonard Bernstein. We succeed as a bank when we help our customers and communities succeed, and we’re proud to sponsor this opportunity for these dedicated BUTI student musicians,” said M&T Bank New England Market President Tim Wade.
