School of Visual Arts Welcomes Three New Faculty Members
The Boston University School of Visual Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of three new assistant professors to the faculty: Lucy Kim (Painting, Interdisciplinary), Breehan James (Painting, Foundations), and Felice Amato (Art Education). The three will begin their new roles at Boston University in the Fall 2017 semester. “We are thrilled to have these three exceptional artists and educators join our faculty,” says Jeannette Guillemin, School of Visual Arts Director ad interim. “Their diverse backgrounds and artistic perspectives will deeply enrich our students and our school, and we look forward to welcoming them to our community this fall.”
Lucy Kim (Painting, Hybrid)
Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised between South Korea, Myanmar, and the United States, Lucy Kim combines sculpture and painting in relief works that explore the uncanny at work in the everyday. Her work was recently featured at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, as part of the 2017 James and Audrey Foster Prize. Kim received her MFA from Yale University in 2007, and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. She attended the Yale Summer School of Art and Music, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the MacDowell Colony, and is the recipient of the Carol Schlosberg Memorial Prize. She is represented by Lisa Cooley in New York.
Breehan James (Painting, Foundations)
Originally from northern Wisconsin, Breehan James’ paintings reconsider the landscape tradition, exploring ideas of place and the relationship between people and the natural world today. Much of her work is produced in situ, and she has led undergraduate courses in wilderness exploration and on-site artmaking. James returns to Boston University, where she served as a full-time visiting Lecturer during the 2015-16 academic year. Previously she was an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. James has participated in residencies at the Marie Sharpe Walsh Studio Program in New York; the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, Norway; and the National Gallery of Canada. In 2012, Modern Painters named James one of their “100 Artists to Watch.”
Felice Amato (Art Education)
Felice Amato is an artist and educator whose creative practice combines sculpture, performance, puppetry, and storytelling. Amato received her PhD in Performed Research in the Arts and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as her MEd from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her diverse teaching experience includes art education in the classroom as well as community-based teaching.
