Based on the compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, based on Pierre Beaumarchais’ play, da Ponte’s Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) is a comic opera that provokes and humors its audience. The story opens on Figaro and Susanna’s wedding day and follows the Count’s scheme to lure Susanna to bed before Figaro can.
As revolutionaries in their era, Beaumarchais and Mozart created both a provocative play and witty opera to pointedly, yet playfully, mock the hereditary principal associated with nobility prior to the French Revolution. Imagined through a contemporary lens, this production accentuates the opera’s continued relevance in the 21st century and the unjustifiable struggle between the classes.
BU Opera Institute welcomes German-native David Paul as guest director; Paul previously directed Le nozze di Figaro at Opera Saratoga.
Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
