Leyla Tonak is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Leyla graduated from BU Summa Cum Laude in 2018 with a BFA in Painting and a minor in Arts Leadership (CFA/KHC). Through BU’s education program, she guest-taught visual arts workshops at MCI Norfolk, a medium security men’s prison, which spurred her interest in the transformative capabilities of art practice for processing trauma. She is a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant for emerging artists. Post-grad, while continuing her studio practice, she has worked for three years supporting defense attorneys as a paralegal on federal criminal cases in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. With a Fulbright to Istanbul, Turkey, Leyla hopes to study the country’s growing epidemic of femicide through the lens of visual art as political response, history mapping and a method of healing.
