• ASTRONOMY — PhD Student Checklist

  
  FORM: PROGRESS CHECKLIST FOR ASTRONOMY DEPARTMENT PHD STUDENTS

  PROCEDURE: Student completes Astronomy PhD Progress checklist and submits form as applicable to Faculty Advisor and/or Director of Graduate Studies for advising and department approval.
  TIMELINE: Completed prior to or during advising meetings, or as applicable, during the course of student’s progress through the Astronomy PhD program.

Registration

• ASTRONOMY — Graduate Course Registration Form

  
  PROGRAM STAGE: Registering for graduate Astronomy research coursework
  *NOTE*: Only for registration for graduate-level Astronomy Department courses restricted with “Department Consent” in MyBU Student.

  PROCEDURE: Student completes Section A and B only of Astronomy Graduate Petition form and submits form to Faculty Advisor (or Director of Graduate Studies, *only* if student does not yet have a faculty advisor) to begin form review. Form approval required by Faculty Advisor (if the student has one), Director of Graduate Studies, and Department Chair, to be considered complete.
  TIMELINE: Submitted prior to requested petition component time frame, or as applicable.

• GRS — Petition for Extension of Time to Complete PhD Requirements Form

  
  FORM: GRS PETITION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME TO COMPLETE PHD REQUIREMENTS FORM
  PROCEDURE: Student completes GRS Petition Extension form and submits form to Faculty Advisor, Director of Graduate Studies, and Department Chair for approval.
  TIMELINE: Petition for extension must be submitted prior to the end of the current time limit.

Dissertation

• ASTRONOMY — Dissertation Steering Committee Membership Form

  
  FORM: ASTRONOMY DISSERTATION STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP FORM
  PROCEDURE: Student completes Section A only of Dissertation Steering Committee form and submits form to Faculty Advisor to begin form review. Form approval required by Faculty Advisor, Director of Graduate Studies, and Department Chair, to be considered complete.
  TIMELINE: Within 3 months after passage of the PhD Oral Qualifying Examination.

• GRS — Dissertation Prospectus Approval Form

  
  FORM: GRS DISSERTATION PROSPECTUS APPROVAL FORM
  PROCEDURE: Student receives approval of their dissertation prospectus by their Faculty Advisor and their Dissertation Steering Committee, then completes the Prospectus Approval form and submits it to Director of Graduate Studies or Department Chair for department approval.
  TIMELINE: Submitted at least six months prior to defense date or anticipated defense date time frame.

PhD Final Exam (“PhD Defense”)

• ASTRONOMY — Schedule of PhD Final Examination with Abstract Approval Form

  
  FORM: ASTRONOMY SCHEDULE OF PHD FINAL EXAMINATION WITH ABSTRACT APPROVAL FORM
  PROCEDURE: Student completes Section A and B only of Schedule PhD Final Exam with Abstract form, includes a properly formatted copy of their dissertation abstract, and submits form to Faculty Advisor to begin form review. Form approval required by Faculty Advisor, Director of Graduate Studies, and Department Chair, to be considered complete. *NOTE*: Please note there are two pages to this form; Section B is on page 2.

  TIMELINE: Submitted as soon as PhD defense exam day and time are confirmed with committee, and dissertation abstract is ready for final departmental review, but no later than five weeks prior to the exam date.

• GRS — Special Service Appointment Form

  
  FORM: GRS SPECIAL SERVICE APPOINTMENT FORM
  PROCEDURE: Student completes Special Service Appointment form(s) as applicable and submits form(s) with accompanying documentation to Director of Graduate Studies or Department Chair for department approval.
  TIMELINE: Submitted as soon as need for SSA is known for a committee member and no later than three weeks prior to PhD Final Oral Exam date.
