It’s the beginning of the end (of college life) for the Class of 2026. This morning is the annual Senior Breakfast, marking the official kickoff of Commencement festivities.

More than 2,000 students, many dressed up for the occasion, will start forming a line outside the George Sherman Union Friday morning before doors open at 9:40 am. The breakfast starts at 10 am sharp. The event includes a fancy meal and key details about Boston University’s 153rd Commencement—including the ceremony’s main speaker—which will be held on Sunday, May 17, on Nickerson Field.

After a brief greeting by senior emcee Ace Mothershed (Wheelock’26) and Nancy Martinsen, associate dean of students, and a prayer by Reverend Robert Allan Hill, dean of Marsh Chapel, the crowd will tuck into a meal of fresh fruit, pastries, lyonnaise potatoes, smoked apple sausage links, asparagus and cheddar egg strata, and tofu scramble (with sauteed tomato and spinach). Students may notify their server of any dietary restrictions and can receive alternative meals upon request.

Then, the seniors will receive some important updates: the names of their Commencement speaker, this year’s honorary degree recipients, the Baccalaureate speaker, and the winners of the University’s highest teaching honors—the Metcalf Cup and Prize and the Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Student leaders will talk about Senior Week activities and the progress of the Class Gift Campaign.

The morning will also feature live performances by the BU jazz band and the a cappella group In Achord, and a slideshow of memories of the graduating class, starting with their arrival on campus in September 2022.

Senior Breakfast is at 10 am Friday May 1st in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, with overflow seating available throughout the facility.

Check back on BU Today this afternoon for an updated Senior Breakfast article, with the names of the Commencement speaker, honorary degree recipients, Baccalaureate and student speakers, and Metcalf Cup and Prize and Metcalf Award winners.
