Oktoberfest festival, Terrier hockey, and Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations this October weekend
As the semester picks up, check out these fall weekend events for a nice break from your studies. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to support the Terrier sports teams, and local festivals will have you exploring all of Boston. Plus, celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with different cultural events around the city.
World Mental Health Day
This Thursday is World Mental Health Day, and BU is hosting free mental health screenings on both the Charles River and Medical Campuses for students, staff, and faculty. There will also be a resource fair where attendees can pick up care packages, enter raffles, and meet therapy dogs. This is a great opportunity to reflect and make sure you’re taking care of yourself.
Thursday, October 8. Screenings will be held on the George Sherman Union Plaza from 11 am to 3 pm and on the Medical Campus’ Talbot Green between 11 am and 2 pm.
BU’s Fringe Festival
Fringe Festival is an annual event that aims to produce new or rarely seen opera and theater works. For its 30th season, the festival opens with The Seven Deadly Sins, described as a blend of “biting satire, cabaret, and unforgettable music,” taking the audience on a journey through ambition, morality, and the price of success. A collaboration between CFA’s Opera Institute and School of Theatre,
Fringe Festival kicks off on October 9 and runs through November 7.

Fall Fest Market at Trillium Fenway
What better way to spend your fall weekend than shopping and supporting local businesses? Head over to Fenway where the outdoor lawn of 401 Park is turning into a bustling market highlighting local vendors. You’ll find everything from vintage clothes and jewelry to handmade goods and art.

Boston University Women’s Soccer vs. Bucknell—Breast Cancer Awareness Game
Watch the Terriers take on Bucknell on Saturday. If you plan to attend, make sure to wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Can’t make it to the stands? You can stream the game here.

Boston University’s men’s ice hockey vs. Brown University

Harvard Square Oktoberfest
Celebrate Oktoberfest with the Harvard Square community, and enjoy live music, street vendors, crafts, and festive beer gardens throughout the square. Make sure to stay for the iconic HONK! Parade at 1 pm, with bands marching from Davis Square to Harvard Square. Dancing is encouraged!

Indigenous Peoples’ Day Open House, Free Admission at the Museum of Fine Arts
In keeping with tradition, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts is offering free admission to all Massachusetts residents on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, in collaboration with the Fenway Alliance’s Open Doors festival and the Fenway Cultural District. The day will feature a variety of activities, like basketmaking, storytelling, performances by members of the Wampanoag tribe, and guided tours.
Monday, October 12, 10 am to 5 pm, Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave. Tickets are available in person on a first come, first served basis.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day at the Massachusetts Historical Society
Spend your extra day off from classes at a special Indigenous Peoples’ Day open house. A featured talk with Aquinnah Wampanoag scholar Brad Lopes starts at 1 pm. Guests can then walk around and view a special display of Indigenous art, publications, and materials from the Massachusetts Historical Society collection. There will also be family-friendly activities such as coloring and scavenger hunts.
