Annual Safety Fest to Take Place This Week on Medical, Charles River Campuses

Graphic: A promotional flyer for “Safety Fest” on a white and pale-blue background. Large dark-blue lettering at the top reads “Safety Fest.” Beneath it, dark-blue text invites viewers to join Safety, Security & Preparedness and other campus partners to learn about essential safety tips and resources at BU. A dark-blue rounded rectangle in the lower-left center lists two event locations and times, each accompanied by a red-and-white calendar icon: Talbot Green (BUMC) on September 23 from 11:00–1:00, and GSU Plaza (CRC) on September 25 from 11:00–1:00. The right side features four circular illustrations with red labels: a smiling white dog labeled “Bean,” a blue cupcake decorated with stars and marked “FREE” labeled “Snacks,” a colorful target-like game labeled “Games,” and a gold medal with blue ribbons labeled “Prizes.” A BU Safety, Security & Preparedness logo appears along the bottom left.

Due to rain, Safety Fest on Friday, September 25, on the Charles River Campus will be held in the GSU Link, from 11 am to 1 pm.

September is National Preparedness Month, the annual public awareness campaign highlighting the importance of preparing for emergencies and disasters. Boston University is using the campaign as an opportunity to remind students, faculty, and staff about the need to stay informed about potential risks and the proactive steps they can take to ensure the safety of the BU community.

This year, BU Safety, Security & Preparedness (SSP) is hosting its third annual Safety Fest on Wednesday, September 23, on the Medical Campus’s Talbot Green, from 11 am to 1 pm, and on Friday, September 25, on the Charles River Campus in the GSU Link, from 11 am to 1 pm. Open to all students, staff, and faculty, the events allow everyone to “walk away with practical tips, new connections, and a better sense of how to stay safe and prepared at BU,” says Rene Fielding, executive director of Emergency Management. There will be interactive activities, free giveaways, and snacks—plus a visit from Bean, BU’s community resource dog (CRD), who will make an appearance at both events at 11:30 am. In addition to SSP, representatives from Environmental Health & Safety, Information Services & Technology (IS&T), BU Cycle Kitchen (BUCK), Campus Planning & Operations, and BU Emergency Medical Services, will be taking part.

Annual BU Alert test on September 25

BU’s observance of National Preparedness Month culminates with the annual test of the BU Emergency Notification System, BU Alert, on Friday, September 25, at approximately 4:50 pm. BU Alert provides critical rapid and reliable information during emergencies through email, text, landline, and push notifications via the Everbridge app. In addition to direct messages, the test alert will also be posted on all BU websites and on the BU Police X (formerly Twitter) account, @BUPolice.

Members of the BU community are urged to make sure their BU Alert information is up-to-date. Students can update their contact details, including address and phone number, through the MyBU student portal under the “Personal” tab. Faculty and staff can do the same by logging into the BUworks central portal and updating their “BU Alert Information” under “Employee Self-Service.”

“Safety Fest is a great opportunity to bring our community together and highlight the resources, knowledge, and simple steps that can help us all be better prepared,” Fielding says. “The annual BU Alert test is an important part of that preparedness. In an emergency, timely information can make all the difference. We want our community to know where to turn for reliable updates and to be ready to take action when it matters most. Our goal is simple: be prepared, stay informed, and stay safe.”
